Eight Qualify for BIG EAST Championship in Track & Field Season-Opener at Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Eight Syracuse University track & field student-athletes qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in the first meet of the outdoor season at the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by Miami on Saturday, March 16.
Senior hurdler Stacey Dwyer (Huntington, N.Y./Barton County CC) placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.26 to qualify for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. Freshman Nicole Kendrick (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) posted BIG EAST qualifying marks in the discus and hammer throw. Kendrick threw 148'6.00" for fourth in the discus, which is also an ECAC qualifying mark, and 151'10.00" in the hammer for seventh place. Classmate Johvonne Hernandez (Port Isabel, Texas/Port Isabel) also qualified in the hammer with a throw of 138'1.00".
On the men's side, junior Latroy Oliver (Hartford, Conn./Weaver) ran a BIG EAST qualifying-time of 10.85 in the 100-meter dash. Junior Richard Polidore (Chino, Calif./Chino) placed third in the triple jump with a qualifying distance of 45'6.25". Classmates Tim Biever (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) threw 156'4.00" and Steve Bedard (Windsor, Ont./St. Joseph's) threw 146'6.00" in the discus to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship. Bedard also qualified in the hammer throw with a distance of 157'2.00".
The final BIG EAST qualifier for SU was junior Sam Prescod (Bridgetown, Barbados/Harrison), who threw the javelin 176'8.00".
Both men's and women's teams return to action at the Texas Southern Relays in Houston this Friday and Saturday, March 22 and 23.
